Why Is My Hair Falling Off? Major Causes...

Shedding a little part of your hair while combing/brushing is normal for ladies, but when it gets serious it becomes a cause of concern for you. Losing hair normally doesn’t have much effect on your appearance or warmth, as your head has plenty more to make up for the daily loss. But there may be a more significant reason for your hair loss when you start seeing your scalp or bald spots.

When you think of hair loss, you may think of the genetic factors, like male pattern baldness. Hormones, thyroid problems, infections, medications, and other diseases can all cause hair loss too. As a lady who once experienced it and also learnt from many peoples experience, i have come to shed some light on what i understood so far about hair loss:

1. Genetics
The No. 1 factor of hair loss is your gene. A genetic predisposition of hormonal balances and imbalances, along with the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), are the lead causes of hair loss. Contrary to popular belief, genetic predisposition to hair loss can be inherited by either your mother or your father’s side of the family.

2. Physical Stress/Trauma
Any kind of physical trauma—surgery, a car accident, or a severe illness, even the flu—can cause temporary hair loss. This can trigger a type of hair loss called telogen effluvium. When your mental health is traumatised or stressed, it also affects your physical health which includes how healthy your hair is. Hair has a programmed life cycle: a growth phase, rest phase and shedding phase. When you have a really stressful event, it can shock the hair cycle, (pushing) more hair into the shedding phase. Hair loss often becomes noticeable three-to-six months after the trauma.

3. Pregnancy and Hormonal Change
Pregnancy is one example of the type of physical stress that can cause hair loss (that and hormones). Pregnancy-related hair loss is seen more commonly after your baby has been delivered rather than actually during pregnancy. But, you don't have to worry because as long as you keep fit and healthy, then your hair is bound to be healthy. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can lead to temporary hair loss that can last from six months to up to a year after childbirth. Menopausal women can also experience hair loss due to hormonal shifts.

4.  Poor Nutrition and Diet
Poor nutrition, rapid weight loss, a high consumption of animal fats and deficiencies in biotin, iron, protein and zinc can reduce vital amino acid and vitamin absorption needed for hair growth.

5.  Ageing
Unfortunately, as we age, our follicles can deteriorate and cause hair loss.
The hair follicles do not function well, which encourages hair problems due to the malfunctioning in some body parts as we age which cannot be avoided. The only way to stop the hair loss is keep fit even as you age and take healthy fruits and supplements.

6. Nutritional Deficiencies
Zinc and iron deficiency are the most common nutritional links to hair loss. But some evidence indicates that low intakes of fats, vitamin D, vitamin B12, vitamin C, vitamin A, copper, selenium, and biotin could also be to blame.

7. Use of Chemicals
Relaxers are made of chemicals, which when used wrecks havoc and damages the hair.
